Factors Limiting the Range Extension of Corals into High-Latitude Reef Regions

چکیده
Reef-building corals show a marked decrease in total species richness from the tropics to high latitude regions. Several hypotheses have been proposed account for this pattern context of abiotic and biotic factors, including temperature thresholds, light limitation, aragonite saturation, nutrient or sediment loads, larval dispersal constraints, competition with macro-algae other invertebrates, availability suitable settlement cues micro-algal symbionts. Surprisingly, there is paucity data supporting several these hypotheses. Given immense pressures faced by Anthropocene, it critical understand factors limiting their distribution order predict potential range expansions role that reefs can play as refuges climate change. This review examines outlines research areas address knowledge gaps our understanding light/temperature interactions, coral-Symbiodiniaceae associations, cues, reefs.

Photoacclimatory and photoprotective responses to cold versus heat stress in high latitude reef corals.
Corals at the world's southernmost coral reef of Lord Howe Island (LHI) experience large temperature and light fluctuations and need to deal with periods of cold temperature (<18°C), but few studies have investigated how corals are able to cope with these conditions. Our study characterized the response of key photophysiological parameters, as well as photoacclimatory and photoprotective pigmen...
متن کاملHigh Latitude Corals Tolerate Severe Cold Spell
Climatically extreme weather events often drive long-term ecological responses of ecosystems. By disrupting the important symbiosis with zooxanthellae, Marine Cold Spells (MCS) can cause bleaching and mortality in tropical and subtropical scleractinian corals. Here we report on the effects of a severe MCS on high latitude corals, where we expected to find bleaching and mortality. The MCS took p...
متن کاملScope for latitudinal extension of reef corals is species specific
In their recent paper, Muir et al. (Science, 2015, 348, 1135-1138) demonstrate that the maximum depths of staghorn coral assemblages are shallower at higher latitudes, a trend that correlates with winter light levels. Based on these findings, the authors hypothesize that light availability limits the current latitudinal extent of the group and will constrain future range expansion. Here we rean...

global climate to which they will have to acclimate or adapt, or else perish. Their responses to climate change will have widespread species-level and community-level consequences, and a number of ecologists have predicted changes in the composition and distribution of future ecosystems (Fields et al. 1993). The fingerprint of global climate change can be mapped via the response of species to c...
متن کاملFine-scale environmental specialization of reef-building corals might be limiting reef recovery in the Florida Keys.
Despite decades of monitoring global reef decline, we are still largely unable to explain patterns of reef deterioration at local scales, which precludes the development of effective management strategies. Offshore reefs of the Florida Keys, USA, experience milder temperatures and lower nutrient loads in comparison to inshore reefs yet remain considerably more degraded than nearshore patch reef...
